• Hey there!

Here's what you need to do to get that fancy new Giant Grill Gauge up and running. There's a lot of steps, but that's mostly because we're being thorough. The whole process will take about 10-15 min.

I know it's tempting to just "wing it" but please follow the guide step-by-step, in order.

If you run into troubles with your particular grill setup, don't panic! There are a lot of different grills in this world. There are special guides for unusual grills available on our help center. Search there first.

If you are still stymied, please email support. Our full team is ready to jump in, including the physical product engineers and yes, Chris Young himself. We will work through it with you.

    Let’s get started!

  • Power on the Gauge

    • Using a phillips screwdriver, remove the battery door from the back side of the Grill Gauge.
    • Insert the two included CR2450 batteries, with the plus (+) side facing up.
    • Re-attach the battery door, holding it flush while you thread the screw in.
    • Press the yellow power button on the back of the device.
    • The display will turn on.
  • Update Firmware on your GGG

    • Download the "Combustion Inc" app from the App Store for iOS or Google Play for Android
    • Keep your mobile device as close as possible to the Gauge while updating (within a few inches)
    • Open the settings menu inside the app by tapping the gear icon
    • Go to "settings"
    • Then tap "update devices”
    • After the device has updated, the update page will show "Up-to-date" at the bottom of the listing for the Gauge - now move on to the next step!

Note: please do not update more than one Giant Grill Gauge (or other Combustion tool) at the same time. Leave the other ones powered off (or in standby) while you update. It doesn't take long!

  • Assemble the Heat Shield/Deflector

    • Take note of the collar and spring clip setup on the sensor tube (this is how you will reassemble the parts for proper fit on your grill)
    • Remove the collar and spring clip from the sensor tube
    • Insert the sensor tube into the center hole of the Heat Shield/Deflector and press down firmly until the plastic bit is seated in the silicone housing. It should protrude slightly above the face of the housing
    • You should feel slight resistance when inserting the plastic bit

If the sensor tube is not seated fully, the Grill Gauge will not make a proper connection and no temperature will appear on the display!

  • Mount the Giant Grill Gauge to your grill

    • If your grill already has an attached gauge, remove it by opening the grill lid and unscrewing the mounting nut holding the thermometer in place. (For most grills this is a wing nut that can be turned by hand, but your grill is probably covered in residue, so you will need to first scrub off the crud and then use a wrench to remove the nut)
    • If your grill thermometer has a bezel, you will most likely need to remove that as well
    • Leave the Gauge (the electronic part with all the buttons) off for now
    • Now you can try inserting the Heat Shield/Deflector assembly into the hole that your old thermometer fit into. The Heat Shield/Deflector's three feet will need to make contact with the grill lid or you will risk bending the probe
    • If it fits, you're almost done!

    HEAT SHIELD:

    • Set the sensor tube (probe) and Gauge unit off to the side
    • Slide the washer over the threaded stem protruding through the grill lid, and secure with the included wing nut
    • Insert the sensor tube according to the instructions

    HEAT DEFLECTOR:

    • Set the Gauge (head unit/display) off to the side
    • Insert the sensor tube into the Heat Deflector assembly
    • Compress the spring clip and slide the clip onto the tube with the flat side of the spring "up" facing the lid. Be sure that the tube passes through both holes of the spring clip
    • This requires a fair amount of force. Hold the sensor tube in place from the outside of the lid with your free hand
    • Press the clip firmly up against the inside of the grill lid until the Heat Deflector feels secure and does not move freely
    • Slide the collar up against the bottom of the clip and tighten the wing nut to finger-tight. It should be very snug. Do not use a tool to tighten the wing nut!
  • Attach the Giant Grill Gauge (head) to your grill

    • Power on the device
    • Hold the Heat Shield/Deflector and rotate the Gauge so that the buttons are at the bottom of the display
    • Attach the back side of the Grill Gauge to the mounted Heat Shield/Deflector
    • When mounted correctly, the Grill Gauge should be centered on the silicone disc and not wobble around. If the Grill Gauge is not centered, slide it until you feel the sensor tube snap into the back of the Grill Gauge housing
    • When a good connection has been made, the Grill Gauge will show the current ambient temperature on the large numerical display
    • If this display does not update, ensure that the Gauge is positioned properly over the contact rings
    • If the connection looks correct and the display still does not update, ensure that the pins and contact rings are clean, dry, and free of any debris or buildup on either surface
    • You're ready to cook!
  • Link Giant Grill Gauge to CPT

    1. Turn on the Giant Grill Gauge by pressing the power button on the back of the device
    2. Turn on Predictive Thermometer by removing it from the charger
    3. Place thermometer next to the Giant Grill Gauge for a few seconds
    4. When a temperature appears on the lower part of the screen (small digits), that means they’re linked

    • With multiple Predictive Thermometers, repeat these steps
    • Each Giant Grill Gauge can be linked to up to 4 Predictive Thermometers and the Heat Shield or Heat Deflector it is attached to
    • To Link Booster(s) to Giant Grill Gauge + Predictive Thermometer(multinode MeatNet™) follow steps in the Booster set-up guide
  • Set up your WiFi tool(s)

NOTE: the "get started" page has instructions for this that include pictures! FYI.

    1. Prerequisite set-up
Before you do Wifi, do this:

    • Update or download the Combustion app (iOS) (Android)
    • Make sure to update firmware for all WiFi tools
    • Make sure all WiFi tools are charged

    For WiFi Boosters:

With the Combustion app open, remove the thermometer from the Booster, and turn the Booster on. Make sure your Booster is blinking a single white blink.

    For WiFi Displays:

With the Combustion app open, turn on your Display and remove your thermometer from its charger. Make sure the Display is showing the thermometer’s temperature.

    For Giant Grill Gauge:

With the Combustion app open and the Gauge connected to a Heat Shield or Deflector, turn on your Gauge and make sure the Gauge is showing a temperature (the ambient temperature at the Gauge stem).

    2. Open Combustion mobile app settings and navigate to 'WiFi Devices'

    3. Select the tool you’d like to join to WiFi, then select Join Network.

    4. Select your desired WiFi network and enter your network credentials.

--> If your network is unlisted, select ‘Other...’ from the network list to join it manually.

    5. Joining is complete when the device displays its signal strength.

  • Inclement weather storage

The Giant Grill Gauge is designed to be easily removable from the mount (shield/deflector). That way you can have multiple mounts on your different grills and smokers and use your Gauge on whichever you're actively cooking with.

In temperate climates, it's fine to store the Gauge in position on your grill or smoker.

In cold climates, we recommend storing the Giant Grill Gauge someplace not-frozen, just as you would with any electronic device.

The storage temp limit for the Gauge itself is -4ºF (-20ºC). If it gets too chilly outside, please take it indoors.
