Great news for cooks who like to wander! You can now extend your MeatNet™ coverage to anyplace with internet.
Are you off to Burma or just a daylight basement on the other side of your house? The brisket doesn’t need to know.
What you’ll need for remote viewing:
1. Combustion Predictive Thermometer (CPT): 1st or 2nd Gen
2. Combustion/MeatNet™ Cloud account (see below)
3a. Combustion WiFi tool (WiFi Booster, WiFi Display, Giant Grill Gauge)
~OR~
3b. A “spare” internet-connected mobile device and the Combustion App (“home”) to upload data. You can use a second phone, tablet, or Mac computer (with M1 chip or newer)
4. Your main internet-connected mobile device (i.e. your phone, probably) with the Combustion App to view your cook (“away”)
What you’ll get when remote viewing
- Current temps at all 8 sensors (advanced mode)
- TrueCore®
- TrueSurface™
- TrueAmbient™
- Target temp (cooking to)
- SafeCook status
- “Ready in” time-to-cook prediction
- Time elapsed
- Graphs
- Notifications
- Export cook data (CSV)
For cooking control (setting target temp/SafeCook/etc), use your mobile device within Bluetooth range.
MeatNet Cloud
First, you’ll need a Combustion account.
This is so we can keep your cook data private (and so you can retrieve it later when our library feature is released!). See below for set-up instructions or go to the “get started” page.
You’ll also need to “link” your thermometer to that account (it’s so simple that people often do it by accident - no kidding! There’s also a walkthrough below).
Instructions (and common questions) for WiFi + MeatNet™ Cloud
Collapsible content
Link app to thermometer
- Install/update the Combustion app on one (or more) mobile devices
- Follow in-app instructions for linking Predictive Thermometers (CPTs) to your account
- Look for the “link this device” button
- Follow the instructions to link
- Link all of your CPTs to your device
Set up your MeatNet™ Cloud account
- In the app, tap the Combustion logo (looks like a campfire)
- Tap "Combustion Account"
- You can sign in with email (+password), Google ID, or Apple ID* (*on Apple/iOS devices only)
- Once you’ve set up your Cloud account, the list of “linked” CPTs gets synched to any mobile device using that account
Why do I need an account?
See above. We want to save your cook history - for YOU. So you can look at your cooking data and learn; fine-tune that recipe, track your pork butt progress, all that wonderful stuff. Don’t panic - it’s one and done, no obligation, no ads, no lists, none of that nonsense. It’s to put an ID on your data for your own convenience. Kind of like having a library card.
Set up your WiFi tool(s)
NOTE: the "get started" page has instructions for this that include pictures! FYI.
1. Prerequisite set-up
Before you do Wifi, do this:
- Update or download the Combustion app (iOS) (Android)
- Make sure to update firmware for all WiFi tools
- Make sure all WiFi tools are charged
For WiFi Boosters:
With the Combustion app open, remove the thermometer from the Booster, and turn the Booster on. Make sure your Booster is blinking a single white blink.
For WiFi Displays:
With the Combustion app open, turn on your Display and remove your thermometer from its charger. Make sure the Display is showing the thermometer’s temperature.
2. Open Combustion mobile app settings and navigate to 'WiFi Devices'
3. Select the tool you’d like to join to WiFi, then select Join Network.
4. Select your desired WiFi network and enter your network credentials.
--> If your network is unlisted, select ‘Other...’ from the network list to join it manually.
5. Joining is complete when the device displays its signal strength.
Or use a second mobile device
If you don't have a Combustion WiFi tool, you can still use MeatNet Cloud. You can use another mobile device as the bridge-to-the-internet instead.
- Install/update the app on both devices ("home" and "away").
- Sign in to your Combustion account on each.
- Cook with the CPT as you normally would.
- Leave your “home” mobile device in Bluetooth range AND connected to the internet (via WiFi or 5G or whatever) -- it will stream data to MeatNet Cloud.
- View that live cook data using your other (away) device!
Can I change my target temp while “away”?
Not in the current version. Use the home device (connected to the local MeatNet over Bluetooth) to set a target core temp (predict) and SafeCook™ target. You can also set the prediction target temp using a Combustion Display.
Can I download cook data from expired sessions?
Cook history is being captured, but you can only view/download current cook data (for now). Cook history is stored in the cloud as CSV files. You will eventually be able to download those using the app, for use in analyzing and perfecting your cooking techniques. The app preserves your current/last cook history (CSV + graph) until you either close the app or start a new cook.
In the near future, you’ll be able to access any of your cook data that has been uploaded.
